Multilingualism in Sao Tomé and Principe: Use of Subtitling Approach

Summary Sao Tome and Principe (STP) is a developing country where several languages coexist, although only one of them, Portuguese, serves as the official language. The rest are limited to private use many them at risk disappearing. As pilot experiment find formulas for preservation these languages, this work takes Forro Creole reference. no longer transmitted from parents children, nor it studied in schools, mainly elderly who maintain it. At same time, elders form social group that suffers abandonment discrimination their community. In context, we wondered whether subtitling would be useful preserve promote contribute integration into society; what linguistic perceptions Forro-speaking non-elderly Santomeans are; and, finally, experts International Cooperation (IC), Audiovisual Translation (TAV) Linguistic (LC) think possibilities area. results show participants’ perception Forro, situation subtitling, lead final proposal: recording videos subtitled Portuguese aimed children whose protagonists encourage learning ancestral culture through stories or songs could screened schools communities mobile cinema.
